Hi! I’m Lisa, AKA English Muffin Runs. I’m living life with Myasthenia Gravis, and taking it one adventure and one run at a time
ABOUT
My husband and i are both Air Force brats and have lived all over the world. After meeting in high school, we decided to put down our roots in a small southern town.
Our only child recently completed graduate school and is in the process of flying the nest, leaving us free to wander and roam.
We stay active with walking/running, hiking, kayaking, and cycling, in addition to camping. Come along with us on our adventures!
MYASTHENIA GRAVIS & HEALTH
In 2018 I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Myasthenia Gravis affects the communication between the nerves and muscles, and repeated use or overuse of the muscles causes weakness and fatigue. Strangely enough, it was only discovered after we started running! My right eye was almost always “droopy” in our post-run selfies, and finally my husband persuaded me to make an appointment with the eye doctor. He strongly suspected MG, but referred me to a local neurologist for further evaluation. Bloodwork confirmed the diagnosis.
After a year or so of treatment with little improvement, I sought a second opinion at the University of Florida Department of Neurology (Go Gators!). I was placed on an immuno-supressant and recently had a robotic thymectomy at UF. My symptoms are definitely improving, and my hope is that I can gradually reduce the amount of medication that I take.
Have questions about MG? Let me know!
As if MG wasn’t enough, I’m also a breast cancer survivor! Get those mammograms, ladies. 🙂
